The color was as expected, and I like it. The fabric may end up being an issue with cats as I can see a few pulls in the weave just out of the box. But, after spending way too much time reading every review, I'm glad I went with this one over the linen, I do think it will hold up better. It seems sturdy, though when I look at the stitching at the corners I do hope that the inner burlap that bears the weight of people is more substantive.
At any rate, the assembly instructions describe the folding over of each side of the padding, the directionality of the padding and good details about how to slip it in. It was very easy. My padding is old and it was shedding foam at the edges. But it went in well anyway.
Now, at the point you've got the back foam in the cover, the directions tell you to find 'hook and loop' and I just want you to know they mean VELCRO strips. I stared and stared and reread the instructions until it occurred to me there is Velcro next to the zipper that has to go somewhere to attach - And you WILL find in under the edge of the foam attached to the BACK of the cover.(That advice might have avoided confusion.) Apparently, the VELCRO company has a 'public education campaign' to get people to refer to the product as hook and loop. Well VELCRO, you are failing! I've been here 68 years and I have never heard of it.
Anyway, it might have been useful to give advice about how to attach the velcro pieces together as the one on the back seemed wider and longer. I decided going for the midpoint.
The chair is assembled and I'm thrilled. It took all of about 5 minutes, except for the time I was stumped about hook and loop(really, why Velcro?) The product information says 'dry clean only' at the bottom and delicate machine wash somewhere else. I do not know which I will choose.
I originally thought the price outrageous, and I totally wished they had cotton/rayon as an option. But after putting it on and noting the really clever and complicated sewing job I'm glad it wasn't MORE expensive. It's not the ugliest polyester, I'm hardly noticing. Maybe it will be sturdier than the linen.
My 20 year old cover finally tore at the seat when where it sits on the metal frame. I'm hoping this one lasts 5 years.
I adore this chair, and did not want to let it go. If you feel that way, I think these covers are a compromise. Polyester is cheaper. (Though what about canvas? I might have bought canvas. For me this chair is not a fashion statement it's just the most comfortable chair I've every owned. Everyone my age wants a recliner, I don't get it.)
