I tried an Intermatic transformer first and discovered why a multi-tap transformer is more expensive, much less bulky, and allows for a professional landscape installation (by a DIYer). A very high quality piece of equipment with many taps, which I need to cover 5 long runs and several short ones. A real plus with this unit is that it takes the full 600 watts (300 on each circuit), unlike many transformers that only allow you to use up to 80%. It was easy to install and set up, although a 2 page instruction sheet is all you get. I relied on online info to educate myself before setting it up. All of my lights are Hinkley, so even though their transformers are more expensive, I trust the brand AND the lifetime warranty, since I live near the ocean.
The unit is stainless steel with a secure doorlock. One quirk: the Hinkley logo on mine is upside down when installed. You have to install it minimum 18" off the ground, which worked well for me to keep it below hedge level. But it's a bit awkward installing new lines if you don't have room to lay it down and do them all at once. This is due to the bottom panel that must be screwed in place before you feed your cables inside. Would be much easier if your situation allows you to mount the unit higher.
I am very pleased with this purchase. After you get done smarting at the $600 charge on your account, you realize that you made a good investment, especially if you decide to expand your lighting plan...and you will!
