    The first reviewer gave a very nice long review. I do not disagree with him. This IS a beautiful floor lamp. At night with the lights on, the lamp shade shines like a jewel. I am keeping this lamp. However, I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. I did this because . . . the shape of the glass shade means that the light bulbs are not well shaded. When you sit down and you look at the lamp there is a lot of glare from the light bulbs, which is all you see from this angle. You can use incandescent light bulbs to ameliorate this to a degree. But I am trying to be green and energy efficient, so first I tried fluorescent bulbs. Way too much glare. Then I tried *clear* LED light bulbs (they were on sale), and the glare went down. Next I will try frosted LED bulbs when I find some that get good reviews. But I wish the manufacturer of this lamp would provide some kind of screen to cut down the glare. Perhaps I can try concocting one of my own, a fabric stretched over a wire frame, which may shade and work with the fluorescent or LED light bulbs that remain safely cool?

    As I was researching this lamp online, I found this bit of background on its creation. Odd that the designer is never mentioned by name, but interesting nonetheless:

    "Sometime around 1905, one of America's premier Prairie style architects was trying to resolve a commission given him by the son of a great railroad baron. The young man wanted a floor lamp that would easily fit into his new Carolina Blue Mountains hunting lodge, but not be 'too rustic.' The architect's creative genius was temporarily blocked, so he decided to take a walk in the high Carolina forests surrounding the acreage the lodge was being built on. As so often happens, inspiration was found and the architect sketched the simple design of light amber art glass decorated only with a blossoming tree bough. The timeless, understated design became known as Grove Park as has been reproduced countless times over the last 100 years. Quoizel's new reproduction features 240 pieces of high quality hand rolled art glass, both copper-foiled and hand-leaded. Keeping with the 'tree' theme, they placed oak wood both at the top and bottom portions of the fortress style four-square base. The wood is finished in a Medium Oak and the base metalwork finished in a slightly gold-toned bronze."

    Having previously purchased the Quoizel Pomez Agate Stone Tiffany 3-Light Floor Lamp, I was pleased with the quality of the company's lamps and their adherence to Arts & Crafts design principles. The thing my wife and I liked most about the Grove Park was the way it bridges the masculine and the feminine. The solid geometric base blends with the subtle flowering branch motif of the shade to create an attractive whole that I think would appeal to a broad range of tastes. It certainly complements any Mission, Arts & Crafts, Prairie, or nature-inspired interior.

    We placed it in a corner of our bedroom next to an armchair to create a reading nook. The art glass shade is slightly iridescent, beautifully constructed, and does a good job of suggesting nature without beating you over the head with it. When illuminated, it casts a warm yellow-green light, but it looks great even when turned off. The lamp uses two bulbs (each on a separate pull), up to 100-watts each. After trying several bulb options, we actually settled on two 60-watt (equivalent) compact fluorescents. I try to use CF bulbs where I can, but in all honesty, they just cast a nasty light sometimes. Yet for some reason, we actually liked them better than incandescent bulbs in this lamp. Go figure.

    Another thing I like about this lamp is the design of the shade holder. Four metal arms branch out to support it from beneath, while a combination of nuts and washers hold it on at center. This, in combination with the stout base, makes the lamp very stable and keeps the shade from wobbling.

    Overall, you'd be hard pressed to find a more attractive or better designed Arts & Crafts style lamp at this price point. It's now our favorite lamp in the house.
