I hope this isn't too long! I wanted to write about this just in case somebody else wanted to do what I did. It would have been nice to have some guidance on how to modify this to make a swag light. We are not experts but this is what we did and we love it!
I had a very hard time finding a LARGE drum pendant that would work for my dining/kitchen/family room combo. The problem we had was the builder of our house put our electrical outlet for the lighting fixture center with the big window - but that location wouldn't be center over a typical rectangular table. I didn't want to have to hire an electrician to move the electric over and then patch up the ceiling. So a swag light fixture was needed so I could "swag" over to the center of the table.
So I went on a hunt for a SWAG pendant light with a LARGE drum that had more than 6' of electrical cord. What I wanted basically didn't exist at a decent price range (all seemed to be about $700 to $1,000). So I ended up modifying this pendant light to fit my needs. I have to admit it is PERFECT! Overall cost was approximately $300 with my modifications. See later for items I purchased.
The lamp shade size is what I really wanted as a minimum. This shade is 22" in diameter and 10.5" tall. Almost everything out there is 18-20" in diameter and only 5-8" tall. I wanted a larger and wider shade (I could have gone wider if I could have found it - 26" to 28" would be ideal). Be aware - lots of drum lights dimensions are misleading out there.... they include other items in their dimensions so the lamp shade height is a lot smaller than advertised. I had this problem with another light I had purchased on line before this one.
The shade has very durable and hard clear plastic drum inside of the shade. The color of the shade is also super. It is a soft beige with hints of brown oatmeal when the light is turned on. Very attractive and not obnoxious at all.. The diffuser is a soft white and fits perfectly. Four lights that can take up to 60 watts each. Good up-lighting also. I am loving my new room décor! Wish I could post a picture but Amazon won't let you do that anymore.
Most people hang their light approximately 32-36" above the table. Based on my ceiling height plus the swag over distance to the center of the table I needed about 8' of electrical cord. I found that most lights were "six" feet long of electrical but that also included the lamp so everything would be too short. I really didn't want to "splice" more electrical either. Amazon's description of cord length was non-existent but I found it on another website. You get approximately 12' of cord so this was plenty for me (it might have been 15' - I can't remember at this point but it was at least 12').
In order to make this light into a SWAG light I bought the following items from a local big box home improvement store: 1 can of Rust-Oleum Metallic Paint/Primer in One spray paint in "oil rubbed bronze" (model number 261407) and TWO Westinghouse 18' Swag Light Kits in rubbed oil bronze (model number 70125). Why I needed to buy two of the swag kits is because I needed the loop out of the second kit. I couldn't find loops alone. The first kit I used a swag hook, chain and one loop from it - that color already matched the mocha color of the fixture. Took only the loop out of the second kit. Threw out everything else (what a waste). Will explain why two loops are needed later.
This light uses a pole system with threads to hang the light fixture from the ceiling cap - again this was too short and I needed a swag. I basically threw away the pole system and kept the ceiling cap. The color of the pole and cap is mocha. I found that the rubbed oil bronze color was almost a perfect match.
The electrical "guts" of the light is black and white with the copper grounding wire. Since I was going to loop the electrical threw the chain from my swag kit (bought separately discussed up above) I didn't want the wires to stand out visually. We spray painted the wires with the spray paint (bought separately discussed up above). To protect the unit we took the cover of the box that it came in and put a hole in the center. We looped the electrical out through the hole and then spray painted outside in the yard. We left the top of the electrical wire exposed so we could still tell what was white, black and copper.
While the paint was drying we installed the swag hook into the ceiling over the center of the table. There are some pretty awful looking swag hooks out there and the one in the Westinghouse kit we bought wasn't that bad or too large looking.
Once that was done it was time to attached the chain from the Westinghouse kit to the lighting unit. That is where you need your LOOP. The loop has a threaded end and the loop on the other side. The threaded end fits perfectly into the top of the Quoizel light unit (the pole system has the same type of thread). With pliers you can add the chain to the loop that is now attached to the light fixture. We looped the wiring every three chain links. It looks great and you hardly notice the wiring. We took this up to the swag hook then linked it over to the outlet in the ceiling.
We attached the SECOND loop to the ceiling cap that was provided with the light fixture (this again had a threaded end). The end of the chain will attach to the second loop. My husband cut off the excess chain and wire then attached the electrical wires to our existing electrical and bonding lug. Installed the cap to the ceiling. No issues at all very standard at this point.
I bought this unit through Amazon Warehouse for approx. $250 (normal cost at the time was $299). The spray paint was $7 and the two lighting kits were $16 each. The labor was free but it did take us about two hours to do (plus an additional trip to the store for the second loop).
