I am especially pleased that the adjustable arm component reaches over the edge of my piano lid to shine light on all of the music with no shadows. This is important as some desk lamps or even piano lamps don't tilt far enough beyond the base to prevent lamp-base shadows on the music. This lamp is perfect. nice color and sturdiness. The regular piano light bulbs don't fit. The screw that helps you adjust the light direction doesn't really hold well. Other than that, I like the bronze finish. I use small regular light bulbs instead and that is fine for me.

The bottom of the lamp just has like a piece of thin fabric covering the mechanics, something in that stuck out slightly more than the lamp base, so you set the lamp on the piano, it rocks back and forth. The base is not level. It’s unusable. Like a uneven table at a restaurant, the kind you have to stick a matchbook under the leg so it doesn't wobble, that was this lamp. Otherwise it looked okay. Not as nice as pictured but okay. Didn’t do much of any other testing when I realized it would not sit on the piano.

I would advise you to disregard all negative reviews written on this particular piano lamp to date.
I read them and was frankly a bit confused on the swing from Quality to "Junk". After receiving this lamp, I can only assume that those negative reviews are referring to a different product.....
This lamp seems to be extremely well made, it is HEAVY DUTY, moving parts work well, I see nothing wrong with it.

To address some of those negative comments, please read on.
1. "Tippy" - no way, not possible, heavy base, this thing is not going to tip over - ever.
2. No liner on bottom with "pointy exposed metal" exposed to scratch your piano - mine is lined perfectly.
3. Bulbs are NOT included (may have been years ago? But, no, they are not, you do need to purchase them.
4. Bulbs "peek" out from under the shade because the fittings are installed "cock eyed" - not the case at all.
5. Hard to install bulbs because of lack of "finger space" - again, not true.
The shade pivots up and down from left to right, allowing you to install/remove the bulbs without the shade
hampering your progress. That being said, perhaps you installed your bulbs, did not "straighten" the shade and
you now think the bulb connector base is "cockeyed" as a bulb peeks out on one side? Just a thought.....
6. Finally, "lamp sags down". Again, I find that hard to believe. Mine is not, and I would believe, will not do that.
I put it through the test and it never sagged once - not at either joint where it could.

One final note, yes, the the on/off switch is in the front, exactly where I would expect it to be!

All this being said, I would highly recommend this lamp if your are looking for a quality product. I feel very confident that all those negative reviews are against another product, not this Lite Source LS-398D. I would even venture to say that they are not a Lite Source product at all based on what I have received.

This light is supposed to hold its position where it is adjusted to, you'd expect that to be the case, especially for how much it cost. That is not the case, this light won't hold position, it tilts down and forward in both the arm and the bulb shroud adjustments. I will now have to take the time to see if I can fix it, because other than those failures, this is a decent light and I don't want to take the time or hassle to return it.

Pros:

- Good price for a piano lamp - most I've seen are over $100.

- Articulates both at the lamp and at the base, so you can bring the light as low as necessary to the page.

- Balance is good - I had the lamp bent fairly low and it showed no signs of wanting to tip.

Cons:

- The shade is two finger-widths wider than a T bulb, which makes it tough to screw in the light bulbs.

- The lamp just doesn't look that great.
- The dark bronze finish doesn't have any luster. The areas where it's been scuffed to show the lighter bronze finish underneath are a little too consciously done - that lighter finish shows through *only* on the corners and edges where it's been scuffed and nowhere else, rather than having the "textured" look you'd see in a typical oil-rubbed bronze finish.
- The lamp shade isn't round, which may not be apparent from the picture. Look closely and you can tell that the shade is a series of flat sides. Each corner of the shade has been scuffed to expose the lighter bronze finish. The result looks kind of flimsy.

Notes:
- The lamp takes two T-type light bulbs (not included).

- The electrical cord is around 4 feet long - adequate to stretch from the middle of my console upright piano to the electrical socket on the wall to the left of the piano.

I'm returning this lamp for a refund. Even though it's functional, it just doesn't look good on my piano. Three stars because I think it fills a need, but the execution isn't great.
