The Designers Fountain lamp post top 31136-ORB listing on Amazon and several other retailers' sites erroneously state that the shade material is glass; there is no glass shade or globe and the "manufacturer" confirmed that this is intentional and that none is available. Another feature descriptions states, "Gasket designed for wet locations and ideal for the outdoors"; although the fixture is designed to cover the bulb mounting from falling rain, there is no gasket... it's open to snow and wind-driven rain. Also, I wouldn't want to climb a step ladder to work a tiny vacuum hose throgh the scrollwork to clean out the bugs and debris that will assuredly accumulate in the base.
The light distribution is inefficient by design; the bulb is mounted at an angle in the top resulting a good portion of the bulb's light to be cast up into the upper fixture with no reflector to redirect it in a useful direction. The gridwork casts noticeable shadows and further diminishes light output. Don't lose the small star washer... one fell to the floor when I removed the cover to get to the bulb socket; I assume that it goes on one of the screws between the cover and fixture to electrically bond the cover to the fixture.
It is an attractive fixture that is well made. At less than $80, the price was substantially less than most other retailers, including those carrying identical product branded under other names. I have to assume that there are consumers that will find the fixture fine for their intended usage, but it was a huge dissapointment for me and is going back.
