Ours arrived made from rubberwood which is a tropical hardwood tree that is harvested after being used to produce rubber. At first I wasn’t sure it would work for us because the wood grain is different than the trim in our house but upon further reflection I believe this change in wood species may give this seat better durability and resistance to warping and cracking. It doesn’t do well outside with moisture but it is well sealed with a high gloss finish so we will give it a try.

There are some things in life with which we should not compromise. A sound roof, reliable heating and cooling,
the best car we can afford.....a good toilet seat! I have found the latter at Amazon.com. First may I say that I think this seat is fantastic, I love the look, the large opening and general construction. Yeah, it costs about double what I had been paying, but like I said; don't quibble when it comes to a comfortable place to read your National Geographic circa1977. Of course nothing is perfect, so I must temper my accolades with a disclaimer.
You might get lucky with the attaching plastic nuts; I did not. Customer service could not help me in this regard, but to their credit they immediately sent a replacement. But woe is me, the nuts would still not tighten; they strip with just being hand tightened! I asked for and received return/refund labels for both seats. But I LIKE the darn seat so I took a chance and ordered LASCO 14-1061 Toilet Seat Hinge 3/8-Inch Plastic Bolt Nuts and Washers, Problem solved. Like I said, you might get lucky with the OEM nuts, but if you want a terrific seat and don't want any hassle, I'd splurge for the LASCO nuts for 3 bucks (it's an add on item). You will finish that '77 N.G. in gorgeous comfort.

Update: This toilet seat in broke half along the glued wood seams after 1 week. I returned it and was sent a replacement which lasted 11 months before the cheap pot-metal arm broke where it screws onto the lid. This seat looks good but is poorly constructed. The wood planks should be dove-tailed together but are glued. The bolts are stamped. And the pot-metal used to make the hinges is brittle and cheap. If you go with this seat, plan on having to replace it at least once a year.

Also: the picture is misleading as to the color of the wood. In the photo the wood appears to be a light golden oak similar to what is found in most oak hardwood flooring and furnishings. The toilet seat I received looks nothing like it. Instead, the wood is so pale as to be cream-colored, with some brown grain marks running through it. Looks much more like unstained birch than oak. I hope it will darken in time, since right now it looks completely out of place with the other oak items in that bathroom.

On a positive note, the surface is a very thick, smooth and glassy exterior varnish. The surface finish is so smooth that no wood grain can be felt at all, making my husband think the seat was made of plastic. Should hold up very well to water exposure. Mine has a small chip and scratch on the top surface of the lid, but they are minor. Elsewhere the finish is perfect. The bolts that fasten the seat to the ceramic toilet are some kind of strange molded things, not actual bolts since they don't have a continuous machined thread pattern. But the plastic nuts did fit and screw on properly, so installation was quick and easy.

I was really pleased with this seat when it arrived. It has a very high gloss finish, very smooth and glass like. The color was a perfect match to our cabinets which are a light, honey oak. It seemed very durable and to have good quality.

I have to give it 3 stars, however, since it broke where the hinge is attached to the wood. It was just after we had it over a month. I really don't think this is a sign of poor quality by the manufacturer, though. I think it was really just a fluke that ours was one that broke. It was unfortunate that it did break right after the time to return it had expired.

My husband was able to repair it, but after paying over forty dollars for a toliet seat you really don't want to have to repair it after just over a month of regular usage.

This seat appears to be the same as Comfort Seats C1B1R-17BN Designer Solid Wood Toilet Seat with Brushed Nickel Hinges, Round, Oak, except that this one has chrome hardware. I was glad to have read the reviews for the brushed nickel version, esp. one by Judy A., as it helped to figure out why the seat wasn't fitting properly. The seat came with two washers, one thick rubber and one plastic (for each side, left and right). But the instructions don't say how to install them. With either one or both in place (on top), there is a gap that Judy A. pointed out. (Another seat I had used a flat piece of felt-like material. That kind of washer would fit, but I had doubts about its durability.) If you look at this diagram: [...], it seems to imply no washer should be on top. I called the manufacturer and spoke to a pleasant person. She told me the top washers were optional, but sent me a set of washers to try. They are a soft rubbery material that fits into the mounting hole on top. It leaves no gap (which seemed to be the cause of some hinge cracking for the brushed nickel version). I put the thick rubber washer between the nut that you turn underneath and the plastic washer (whose rounded part goes over the hole). Once tightened, the seat doesn't wobble. It looks nice and the lid goes up and down smoothly, with no squeaking. There is no creaking when sitting. The seat doesn't normally move side to side, but if you pull it you can get it to move that way a bit because the hinge rod doesn't fit exactly tightly in the hinge.

Concerning longevity, we'll have to see.
